In the world of evolutionary biology, there is a term for an observable characteristic that is not beneficial to an organism from an evolutionary standpoint, but a byproduct of others that are: spandrel. In the world of dorodango, textures are spandrels; they are not a key component of a successful process, they are the happy byproduct of ones that are. The fact is, these textures wandered into my work because my technique had improved. My theory is this: textures and self-rounding originate from the same thing. There is a feedback loop of moisture and clay: more moisture in a stable core means more moisture in the capsule. The additional moisture in the capsule means it is very good at attracting clay from the dirt that is poured over it. A higher concentration of clay in the capsule absorbs more moisture from the core, and so on.
